SHIPROCK, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say three New Mexico men are dead after a two-car crash north of Shiprock.

New Mexico State Police say the accident occurred about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 491.

They say a vehicle driven by 69-year-old Kenny Shorty of Shiprock was trying to pass two other vehicles and collided head-on with another car.

State Police say Shorty was ejected from his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

They say two Farmington men in the other vehicle - 26-year-old Chance Powell and 42-year-old Joseph Schmidt also were declared dead at the scene.

Albuquerque TV station KOB reports that Powell and Schmidt were Farmington Parks and Recreation employees and were returning from an irrigation workshop in Grand Junction, Colorado when the crash occurred.
