ROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) - A 41-year-old Detroit-area attorney has been charged in connection with an assault on a police officer during a courtroom confrontation.

Roseville police say Thursday that the officer was pushed and punched in the face Wednesday morning in 39th District Court after exchanging insults with an attorney in a drug case.

Police say the confrontation was over the lawyer’s access to a co-defendant in the case.

Nijad Mehanna was arraigned Thursday on assaulting, resisting and obstructing a police officer and assault and battery. Bond was set at $10,000.

A probable cause hearing is set for March 30, followed by an April 6 preliminary examination.

The Associated Press left messages seeking comment Thursday from Mehanna and his attorney.

Police say the officer suffered several loose teeth, a fat lip and bloody nose.
