ELLSWORTH, Maine (AP) - A former teacher at a southern Maine school has been convicted of multiple sex charges in connection with incidents involving an underage student that occurred more than a decade ago.

Ben Hodgdon was found guilty of gross sexual assault, unlawful sexual contact and sexual abuse of a minor in Hancock County. The former educator and coach at Tremont Consolidated School in Bass Harbor also had five charges acquitted.

WABI-TV reports that the abuse occurred in 1999 and the victim was a 13-year-old cross country runner. Hodgdon coached the cross country team at the time.

District Attorney Matthew Foster says he’s thrilled that the family can get some closure in the case. He says he believes there were 12 years between the time of the abuse and it being first reported.
