PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The son of a mafia captain has been released from federal prison and says he wants to return to Rhode Island with his wife and kids.

WPRI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1SVBAUY ) that Anthony St. Laurent Jr. was released from a New Jersey federal prison on Wednesday.

Prosecutors said St. Laurent, Jr., his father Anthony “The Saint” St. Laurent, and his mother Dorothy ran a shakedown scheme for two decades, pulling in as much as $1.5 million in protection payments from bookmakers in the Taunton, Massachusetts area.

St. Laurent Jr. agreed to a plea deal and was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison.

A Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman says the 49-year-old Cranston man has been sent to a halfway house. His sentence is scheduled to end in September.
