OIL CITY, Pa. (AP) - A northwestern Pennsylvania has been convicted of first-degree murder for shooting his wife in the head with a hunting rifle before calling 911 to report the crime.

The defense attorney for 50-year-old Jeffrey Goodman Sr. tried to get a Venango County jury to find his client guilty of third-degree murder. That’s a killing with malice but no premeditation that carries up to 40 years in prison.

But The (Oil City) Derrick (https://bit.ly/1UD9aio ) reports the jury rejected that and took just 45 minutes Wednesday to find Goodman guilty of first-degree - or premeditated - murder in the death of 49-year-old Cathy Goodman. That carries a mandatory life sentence.

Oil City police Chief Robert Wenner says Goodman cooperated with officers and “discussed a three-year, up-and-down domestic situation” that allegedly fueled the incident on Feb. 7, 2015.
