PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gov. Gina Raimondo has nominated a family law attorney to be Rhode Island’s new child advocate.

Jennifer Griffith would replace the state’s outgoing Child Advocate Regina Costa. Costa’s term will expire at the end of the month.

Raimondo says her administration inherited many challenges in the state’s child welfare services. She says Rhode Island kids deserve better.

The advocate’s role includes reviewing the procedures of the state Department of Children, Youth and Families.

Costa announced earlier this month that her office was investigating the deaths of three infants after four children died within a four-month period in 2015. Some had been in foster care.

Griffith says she plans to take a hands-on approach.

She currently works as a staff attorney representing family court clients for Rhode Island Legal Services.
