LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Jared Grubb scored nine of his 20 points in the fourth quarter to lift South Laurel to a 53-50 victory over No. 1 Christian County on Thursday in the first round of the KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16 tournament.

Grubb sank a 3-point shot with 1:17 remaining to give South Laurel (29-6), the 13th Region champion, the lead for good at 49-47. That started a 6-0 run that sent the Cardinals into a quarterfinal game Friday against South Oldham or Owensboro Catholic.

Tyrik Edwards led 2nd Region champion Christian County (29-3) with 26 points and six steals. His layup with 1:56 to play gave the Colonels their only lead of the fourth quarter at 47-46 in a game that had 13 lead changes.

South Laurel hit six of nine shots from the field in the fourth quarter to finish at 50 percent. Christian County shot 37 percent.

The Cardinals also outrebounded the Colonels 36-24.
