PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police serving a warrant on a Philadelphia man who failed to show up in court ended up shooting his pit bull when the animal charged and the suspect fled wearing only his underwear.

Officers arrived at the Port Richmond house Friday morning to serve an absconder warrant on 23-year-old Matthew Harvey.

Philadelphia Police Capt. Nicholas Brown tells WCAU-TV the suspect fled down the street in his boxer shorts. Brown says he left a back door open, which allowed three pit bull dogs to come inside.

One of the dogs charged at an officer, who fired three times, hitting the animal in the leg.

Police are still searching for Harvey. Court records show he’d been arrested in 2014 on drug charges.

Animal control took the dogs. A spokeswoman tells the Philadelphia Inquirer the injured female appears to be doing well.
