MORIARTY, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a dog in New Mexico returned to its owner with what appears to be a human body part.

KRQE-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1Z9MaIH ) that the Moriarty woman called the police as soon as she found the body part on Thursday. Torrance County Sheriff Heath White says his department is now searching the isolated area for remains or disturbed earth.

The department covered about half a mile of ground Thursday but found nothing.

White says it’s not clear how long the body part was outside but that it’s clearly not fresh.

The Office of the Medical Investigator is testing the body part to confirm it is human. If the test is positive, the sheriff’s department will conduct a larger search.
