SAUGERTIES, N.Y. (AP) - A woman at the wheel during a Hudson Valley car accident that killed four passengers has told police she may have accidently hit the gas instead of the brake before the car plunged down a 110-foot embankment.

The Daily Freeman of Kingston reports (https://bit.ly/1RqrXrW ) that 20-year-old Meredith McSpirit explained her actions to rescue workers and relatives after the Aug. 26, 2015 accident in Saugerties.

McSpirit and the four young men killed in the crash had just finished a shift at an equestrian show where they worked.

Citing an incident report released by town police, the newspaper said McSpirit told emergency responders she meant to put her foot on the brake but hit the gas instead.

A grand jury cleared McSpirit of criminal wrongdoing in the crash last month.
