ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - A former campaign treasurer for Virginia Senate Minority Leader Richard Saslaw has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for embezzling more than $650,000 in campaign funds.

Fifty-one-year-old Linda Diane Wallis of Fairfax pleaded guilty back in October in federal court in Alexandria to a charge of wire fraud conspiracy.

Wallis, who also used the name Lynn Wallis Miller, wrote dozens of checks totaling $653,000 in 2013 and 2014 to two fake law firms she created to facilitate the fraud.

Saslaw, a Democrat from Fairfax County, routinely raises nearly $500,000 annually, which he uses to help other Democrats.

The 56-month sentence imposed Friday by Judge T.S. Ellis III was even longer than the 51-month sentence sought by prosecutors.

Court papers indicate Saslaw’s office has not yet received any restitution.
