SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The Great Plains Zoo in Sioux Falls is trying to raise $6 million to build an African lion exhibit.

Officials want to add to the zoo’s collection of big cats, which includes tigers, cheetahs and snow leopards.

Zoo President and CEO Elizabeth Whealy tells the Argus Leader (https://argusne.ws/1R2Vaxt ) that adding lions also would help protect the species.

The zoo needs to raise $1.4 million before it can begin designing a lion exhibit. The earliest that zoo visitors could see lions would be 2020.
