CONWAY, S.C. (AP) - A man has died after shooting himself to end an almost five hour standoff with Horry County police.

Lt. Raul Denis told local media that officers were called to a home late Thursday morning about a man who was threatening to harm himself.

Denis says officials negotiated with the man before he shot himself Thursday afternoon. The man was taken to Conway Medical Center where he died.

Police determined the man was alone in the home on the Intracoastal Waterway.

The U.S. Coast Guard patrolled the area around the home, and part of the waterway was closed for about two hours.

The man’s name was not released.
