LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) - Officials at a Los Angeles-area state prison are investigating the death of an inmate who died of unknown causes.

Correctional Lt. Duane Bennett said 33-year-old Gordon Rowell was found unresponsive early Friday in his cell at California State Prison-Los Angeles County.

He was pronounced dead by the Los Angeles County Fire Department at the prison’s medical facility.

The cause of death is awaiting an autopsy. Officials did not say if they suspect foul play.

He was serving a 13-year sentence from San Diego County for voluntary manslaughter and resisting arrest.

The prison houses more than 3,500 inmates in Lancaster, about 70 miles north of Los Angeles.
