FERNDALE, Mich. (AP) - Officials are investigating after elevated methane gas levels were found in the ground at a Department of Public Works storage yard in Ferndale.

The Daily Tribune of Royal Oak reports (https://bit.ly/1pxZ4UV ) the elevated levels were discovered on a 700-foot section of land in the middle of the property. City officials don’t know the source of the gas, but they say there’s no hazard to residents in the Detroit suburb.

The Department of Public Works says a vent system will be installed so the gas doesn’t build up to dangerous levels. The work is expected to take about six weeks.

Methane was discovered on the Department of Public Works property just over a year ago when the land was being considered for possible residential development. The development failed to pan out.
