HOUSTON (AP) - Two robbery suspects taken into custody after a deadly police-involved shooting in Houston have been arraigned.

Lontay Young, 32, and Ross White-Leonard, 25, faced a judge Friday night on aggravated robbery with a weapon charges, KTRK-TV reported (https://abc13.co/22ucTBN ). A third suspect, 23-year-old Barry Jones, is in the hospital with gunshot wounds, and is expected to be charged upon his release.

Two people were killed in the Thursday evening shooting, which happened when a tactical team opened fire outside of a Houston furniture store after a day of tracking the group of five robbery suspects.

Five officers shot at the group when at least one of the suspects pointed a weapon at them, Houston police spokesman John Cannon said Friday, and two guns were recovered at the scene. No officers were injured.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences identified the two men killed as Scott Bennett and Christopher Nelms. No cause of death was listed.

White-Leonard was treated by paramedics before being arrested. Young had posed as a store employee and tried to hide in a truck parked in front of the business, Cannon said. Officers saw that the man was wearing an ankle monitor and determined he was one of the suspects, Ray Hunt, president of the Houston Police Officers’ Union, said Friday.

Hunt said the tactical team did not have the “probable cause” it needed to apprehend the suspects before they were tracked to the furniture store. When a few of them walked out holding what appeared to be stolen items, officers determined they needed to intervene, Hunt said.

Young was being held without bond at the Harris County inmate processing center. Details were not immediately available about White-Leonard.
