RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The GCC Dacotah cement plant in Rapid City is slated to undergo $90 million worth of improvements.

The Rapid City Journal reports (bit.ly/1pQQBMB) that the project includes equipment replacement in a kiln that had been shut down in recent years. Plans also call for the incorporation of alternative fuels to lower the plant’s impact on the environment and improvements to shipping operations.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced the project during a groundbreaking ceremony at the plant on Friday.

The plant was founded by the state in the 1920s and sold into private ownership in 2001.
