NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Authorities say a man punched a sheriff’s deputy and escaped from a New Orleans courthouse after a judge ordered him jailed.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that 42-year-old Tommie Perry fled the building after Criminal District Court Judge Robin Pittman ordered him to be taken into custody because he apparently failed a drug test while he was free on bond.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports (https://bit.ly/1puzBuW ) that Perry faces previous charges of theft and possession of stolen items. A warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of battery of an officer.

The sheriff’s office said the deputy suffered a minor bruise to her arm.
