AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a Georgia man to life in prison without the possibility of parole in the murder of his former girlfriend in front of her children.

The Augusta Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1VnGL0A ) that 48-year-old Nathan Mims was found guilty of malice and felony murder in the 2014 death of 43-year-old Naty Ortiz-Ramos. A Richmond County Superior Court jury convicted Mims on Friday.

Prosecutors say Mims beat Ortiz-Ramos in the face with both fists before stabbing her at least 37 times as her roommate and two children begged him to stop.

With the exception of some driving offenses and a 2001 theft, Mims had no criminal record.
