CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Shakespeare says it is expanding on Navy Pier with a new $35 million performance venue.

Chicago Shakespeare made the announcement Wednesday morning, saying it plans its first production at The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare during the 2017-2018 season. The Yard will be connected to Chicago Shakespeare’s existing location, which includes two theaters.

The new theater can house an audience of up to 850. It will be made in a sustainable manner by repurposing pieces of the former Skyline Stage across from Chicago Shakespeare.

The announcement comes as Navy Pier marks its 100th anniversary this year. The theater has been there for 16 years.

Chicago Shakespeare will pay for the project with $15 million from Navy Pier Inc. and $20 million in capital funding.
