NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City man will spend 55 years to life in prison for the wounding of a police sergeant.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown says John F. Thomas was sentenced Wednesday for the shooting of Sgt. Craig Bier (beer).

He was convicted in June 2015 of charges that included first-degree attempted murder of a police officer.

Bier was on patrol with an anti-gang unit when he approached Thomas in August 2012. Thomas fled then fired when the officer caught up with him. Bier was shot in both legs.
