TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Pima County Sheriff’s deputy who fatally shot a man at a Tucson resort won’t face criminal charges.

The sheriff’s department announced Wednesday that it has received formal notification that Deputy Travis Rice won’t be prosecuted in connection with the Dec. 11 death of Steven Wickert.

The 36-year-old Wickert was shot following an altercation at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon.

Sheriff’s officials say Wickert’s girlfriend had called 911 and reported that he stole her purse and cellphone after an argument and fled the scene.

They say Wickert was found hiding in a dark stairwell and he attacked and tried to strangle Rice before being shot once in the head.

Wickert was taken to a Tucson hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff’s officials say their internal administrative review is ongoing.
