BREINIGSVILLE, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say five people have died in a head-on accident involving a car and a tractor-trailer on an eastern Pennsylvania highway.

Officials in Lehigh County say the crash happened in Upper Macungie Township on Route 222 near the intersection with Route 100 at about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Township police chief Edgardo Colon told reporters that a vehicle heading north on Route 222 crossed the median into the path of a southbound truck, and both vehicles were engulfed in flames in the ensuing crash. He called it a “very, very tragic accident.”

The driver of the car that crossed the median and four passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names haven’t been made public.

The truck driver, Richard Eckrote of Allentown, suffered minor injuries.

An investigation is continuing.
