BARKER, N.Y. (AP) - A 27-year-old man is being held in a New York jail on an assault charge after he crashed his car into an upstate lake and was rescued by a state trooper.

State police say they received a report Saturday afternoon that Elvis Guzman of Cincinnatus had driven away from a violent domestic dispute in the Cortland County town of Willet.

Trooper Michael Gardner spotted the vehicle in neighboring Broome County, where police say the fleeing Guzman drove into a field, down an embankment and into an ice-covered lake.

Troopers say Gardner tied a rope to his belt and with the help of a motorist he pulled Guzman from the car just before it sank.

Guzman is being held in the Cortland County Jail. It could be learned from authorities if he has lawyer.
