ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The trial for an Albuquerque woman accused in the child abuse death of her 9-year-old son is set for Sept. 12.

A judge set the trial date for Synthia Varela-Casaus on Wednesday.

Her son Omaree Varela died in December 2013. An autopsy found he died from severe internal bleeding caused by blunt-force trauma.

Scheduling for Varela-Casaus’ trial was pushed back amid hearings to determine whether she was mentally competent to stand trial.

Omaree’s stepfather was sentenced in November in the case after a jury found him guilty on charges that included tampering with evidence and acting with reckless disregard the day the boy died for not calling 911 sooner.
