SELLS, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities in southern Arizona are investigating the discovery of a vehicle containing skeletal human remains below a cliff on a highway leading to a mountaintop observatory.

The Tohono (toh-HO’-noh) O’odham (AH’-tuhm) Police Department says officers found the remains Tuesday along State Route 386, the highway leading to Kitt Peak National Observatory.

The department says officers went to the scene after a member of the public reported seeing the damaged vehicle.

The department says its investigation is continuing that that no additional information is immediately available.

Kitt Peak is located 56 miles west-southwest of Tucson. The facility is part of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory and operates numerous telescopes.
