SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - A southwest Florida man is spending his 21st birthday in the hospital following a car crash the killed three of his friends.

Local news outlets report that the crash occurred early Monday morning in Sarasota.

Police say Wesley McCurley was speeding on University Parkway when he lost control and crashed into several trees. McCurley died, along with passengers Michael Duffy and Dane Custer.

A fourth occupant, Thomas Bentley, was ejected from the car. He was taken to a nearby hospital and expected to survive. Bentley turned 21 years old Monday. The three victims were also 21.

Investigators say they’ll have to wait for toxicology results to know whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
