BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham police say a man is charged with capital murder in the stabbing death of his 47-year-old mother.

Department spokesman Sean Edwards said in an emailed statement Monday that Anton Cortez Welton is being held without bond in the Jefferson County jail.

Edwards says Roselyn Welton’s relatives checked on her because they hadn’t heard from her in several days. They found the woman lying on her living room floor with multiple stab wounds on Thursday.

Lt. Scott Thurmond told Al.com (https://bit.ly/1o2IoTP ) that Anton Welton was found in his mother’s SUV at an apartment complex and tried fleeing officers as they approached. Jail records say the man is charged with murder during the commission of a robbery.

Authorities say Welton apparently cut himself as officers approached and was treated at UAB.
