DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) - City officials say a lightning strike was most likely the cause of a fire at a Loras College residence hall last week.

Dubuque Fire Chief Rick Steines says lightning likely struck the northwest corner of the building Wednesday night at the level of the down spout and gutter. Strong winds drove the resulting fire through the attic.

Loras College’s assistant vice president for physical resources, John McDermott, says the college’s insurance provider is also treating the incident as a lightning strike.

Steines says restoration on the first floor of the south building is complete and open for classes. Restoration continues at the north end of the complex, where the damage was more significant.

No one was injured in the fire, but 45 students and staff have been displaced.
