MASSENA, N.Y. (AP) - Shippers are getting an earlier start on the Saint Lawrence Seaway thanks to the mild winter.

The navigation season didn’t start until April 2 last year, but this year’s season is beginning on Monday, March 21.

A ceremony will take place Monday in St. Catharines, Ontario to kick off the 58th season of the Seaway. The Canadian Steamship Lines cargo vessel Thunder Bay, with a load of salt, will be the first ship of the season.

The Saint Lawrence Seaway provides access to Great Lakes ports for ocean-going cargo vessels through a series of locks and canals along the Saint Lawrence River.
