ASHLAND, Wis. (AP) - Authorities have released the name of a man who died in an apparent canoeing accident in northern Wisconsin.

The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office identifies the victim as 50-year-old Larry Bettenhausen of Ashland.

Firefighters and emergency workers were called Sunday morning about a partially submerged canoe in the “hot pond” of the Xcel Energy Bay Front Generating Station on the Ashland waterfront.

The Ashland Fire Department launched its “ice angel” rescue craft and had divers in the water. The rescue swimmers located Bettenhausen, who apparently had fallen into the icy water.

Bettenhausen was brought to shore, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities say he was wearing a life jacket.

The accident remains under investigation.
