STORM LAKE, Iowa (AP) - Iowa officials say vegetable-based oil continues to leak from a Storm Lake dredge.

A Monday news release from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says it was alerted that oil was still leaking near the dredge on the east side of the Storm Lake marina Sunday.

Booms were placed around the dredge last week in an effort to contain the leak after it was first discovered. Moss was placed on the oil to try and absorb it.

The release said that a Buena Vista deputy sheriff confirmed that a substantial sheen was spreading outside the booms. Officials have not been able to find the leak’s source and have requested assistance from the contractor. The department has placed a second ring of booms.

Storm Lake is regularly dredged to remove silt and improve water quality.
