BOSTON (AP) - Prosecutors have dropped charges against four men in the country illegally and accused of assaulting a couple in Framingham.

The Boston Globe reports (https://bit.ly/22yN2w3) prosecutors said in court Thursday that new evidence changed the investigation that had involved the Guatemalan citizens.

Nineteen-year-old Elmer Diaz, 24-year-old Ariel Diaz, 32-year-old Adan Diaz and 27-year-old Marlon Josue Jarquin-Felipe had been charged with indecent assault and battery and kidnapping.

The couple told police they encountered the men as they were walking home on March 13. She told police she was grabbed and sexually assaulted and her boyfriend was beaten.

The men’s attorneys called the story suspect. They said Thursday that new video footage and additional witness statements emerged.

The men weren’t released. Their attorneys say federal immigration officials will decide the next steps.
