METAIRIE, La. (AP) - A 75-year-old Metairie urologist was killed while treating a patient in his office near East Jefferson General Hospital and the suspected shooter then ran to a nearby fast-food restaurant and shot himself to death.

Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, says the suspect - described as an elderly man in his early 70s - shot himself in the head as deputies began to enter the restaurant with guns drawn.

Fortunato says Dr. Elbert Goodier III was shot in the head and pronounced dead at his office. The patient he was treating was not injured.

Authorities say the incident began about 2:20 p.m.

It was unclear whether the shooter had any ties to Goodier. The sheriff’s office is still investigating the motive for the shooting.
