MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say the death of a man who went into his burning home in Mesa to retrieve some personal items is being investigated as a possible homicide because it’s not known how the fire started.

Police Detective Steve Berry identified the man killed in the Wednesday night fire as 74-year-old Joseph Chouinard.

According to Berry, witnesses said Chouinard was having dinner at a nearby home when he learned of the fire and ran into his residence to get the keys for his vehicle from the bedroom. He didn’t make it back out.

Berry says the fire is listed as suspicious because there’s no clear indication how it started and because there’s a death involved.

The incident occurred on the 7500 block of East Inverness Avenue.
