CHERAW, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say the pilot of a small plane has died after it crashed near the Great Pee Dee River in Chesterfield County.

Sheriff Jay Brooks told media outlets the plane went down around 10:15 a.m. Thursday north of Cheraw.

Brooks says the wreckage is in a dense swampy area and he suspects federal investigators will have to pull the wreckage of the plane apart to get it out of the woods.

Chesterfield County Coroner Kip Kiser identified the pilot as 59-year-old Walker Jeter Hester of Atlanta.
