MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A police officer shot and killed a man who was struggling with a woman over a rifle inside a house in Memphis, authorities said Thursday.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Susan Niland said Alexio Allen, 30, died at a hospital after he was shot Wednesday night.

Niland said Allen first called police to say there was a man in the backyard of his house in the Raleigh neighborhood in north Memphis. Officers went to the home after a woman called police and said Allen was having a mental episode that included hallucinations.

Allen became agitated and reached for a rifle, and he began struggling with a woman believed to be his girlfriend or fiancee over the weapon, Niland said. The struggle escalated, and an officer fired his weapon at Allen, striking him, Niland said.

Niland clarified earlier statements made by Memphis police, who said Allen had pointed a shotgun at the officer before he was shot.

Authorities said Allen had a mental condition but did not release further details.

Allen was black. Memphis Police Department spokesman Louis Brownlee said the officer who shot Allen also was black. His name was not released Thursday.

The bureau will give a report with its findings to the Shelby County district attorney’s office when the investigation is completed.

A woman who identified herself as the man’s sister told WMC-TV that she and the man’s fiancee were trying to get an ambulance to take him to get help.

“They escalated the situation,” Natasha Lagaite told the station. “We had it under control. He was calm.”

A woman who answered the door at the home declined comment to The Associated Press on Thursday.

This is the third man shot by Memphis officers in the past year.

This version corrects earlier statements made by police that the man pointed a shotgun at officers.
