ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - The Blue Ridge Parkway has listed opening dates for Virginia attractions along its 469-mile scenic route.

Picnic areas open April 15, while campgrounds such as Rocky Knob and Peaks of Otter open May 6. Restrooms open May 5, although portable toilets are available until then.

May 29 launches Sunday evening mountain music programs at the Roanoke Mountain picnic area.

Most other attractions will open during April and May.

In 2015, the parkway attracted about 15.1 million visitors - the highest total in three years.

The Roanoke Times (https://bit.ly/1q3Uhe1) reports that Parkway Superintendent Mark Woods encouraged travelers to commemorate the National Park Service’s centennial by getting out of their automobiles and taking advantage of hiking trails, historical sites and other cultural stops.
