COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Authorities say a deputy has shot and wounded an ax-wielding man in central Missouri.

The Columbia Daily Tribune (https://bit.ly/1VNDR5t ) reports that the man was flown Thursday to University Hospital in critical condition. Callaway County Sheriff’s Lt. Clay Chism said in an email that the man was in stable condition Friday morning. Both the deputy and the man who was shot are white.

Chism says deputies encountered the ax-wielding man while responding to a domestic disturbance call. Chism says the man refused deputies’ commands to drop the ax and “made threatening movements toward the deputies.”

Chism says the deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave as is standard procedure.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the shooting. The domestic disturbance also is under investigation.
