BOSTON (AP) - A Massachusetts man who nearly severed a bouncer’s hand with a machete after he was denied entry to a Chelsea bar has been sentenced to up to 12 years in prison.

Jose David Benitez was also sentenced Friday in Suffolk Superior Court to 20 years of probation. He was convicted of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors say Benitez tried to enter the bar on Nov. 23, 2014 but was denied by the bouncer. They say he pulled a machete from his pants and charged the bouncer, who raised his arm in self-defense and suffered a deep cut just below the wrist.

Benitez was identified through surveillance video. He fled to Virginia but was captured two weeks later.

Benitez’s attorney says they’re disappointed in the verdict.
