MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) - The CEO of Cliffs Natural Resources says the Empire Mine in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will close.

CEO Lourenco Goncalves said roughly 400 employees at the Marquette County mine will get notice in the next two months that the facility is discontinuing operations.

The Mining Journal of Marquette (https://bit.ly/1ZyBbJ2 ) reported Thursday that Goncalves told community leaders and business owners at an annual breakfast that the closure was imminent, with the facility’s iron ore production ending.

Goncalves said the Empire’s fate can’t be changed, and that he has given those involved fair warning that the mine is nearing the end of its life. He said the Tilden Mine, which is also in Michigan, can be expected to continue producing iron ore pellets for many years.
