LEESVILLE, La. (AP) - An elderly man is dead after his car was hit by a train in Vernon Parish.

Louisiana State Police Master Trooper Daniel “Scott” Moreau says it happened about 10:10 a.m. Friday near U.S. Highway 171.

Moreau says 81-year-old Edward Addison, of Anacoco, drove his sport utility vehicle around the railroad crossing arms and was hit by a southbound Kansas City Southern train.

Moreau says the crossing’s red flashing lights and warning bell were activated and the crossing arms were in the down position at the time of the crash.

Addison was wearing his seat belt, but was pronounced dead. No injuries were reported from those on the train.
