METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate the shooting death of a 75-year-old Metairie urologist while the physician treated a patient in his office near East Jefferson General Hospital. Deputies say the suspected shooter then ran to a nearby fast-food restaurant Thursday afternoon where he took his own life.

Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, says 73-year-old John Thomas of Kenner shot himself in the head as deputies began to enter the restaurant.

Fortunato says Dr. Elbert Goodier III was shot in the head and pronounced dead at his office. The patient he was treating was not injured.

Fortunato said in a news release that Thomas had no prior criminal history.

He said a family member told investigator that Thomas was a patient of Dr. Goodier.
