EL PASO, Texas (AP) - A 45-year-old man with an extensive record has been arrested on capital murder charges for the death of an El Paso police officer in a traffic wreck that originally was considered an accident.

Jail records reviewed by the El Paso Times (https://bit.ly/1LKKX8K ) show John Paul Perry was booked into the El Paso County jail Thursday night following his arrest a day earlier near Abilene.

Police Chief Greg Allen says investigators determined Perry “deliberately and maliciously” hit a motorcycle driven by Officer David Ortiz March 10. Ortiz died four days later.

Authorities aren’t discussing evidence gathered in the case. Jail records don’t list an attorney for him.

Court records show Perry has numerous convictions, including one in 2013 for assault where he was tied to a Juarez-related drug cartel prison gang.
