TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey lawmaker and a collation of environmental groups are calling on the state’s attorney general to investigate whether Exxon Mobil lied about the risks of climate change.

State Sen. Ray Lesniak on Thursday said he’s asking the state attorney general to join those in New York and California who are investigating the Texas oil company over claims its comments on climate change were contradicted by internal experts.

A spokesman for Gov. Chris Christie called the request political nonsense. A spokesman for the state attorney general declined to comment.

Exxon spokesman Alan Jeffers says the reports suggesting that the company misled the public were deliberately misleading. He says the company believes the risks of climate change are clear and warrant action.
