BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A Birmingham man has been charged in the shooting deaths of his girlfriend and their unborn son.

Birmingham police announced Thursday that 25-year-old Joshua Watson has been charged with capital murder in the death of 18-year-old Naki’a Darlene Harris, who was pregnant. The charge is capital because it involved the deaths of two people.

Harris and her unborn son were killed Monday night. The baby was set to be delivered in June.

Police say Watson told investigators he went outside to his vehicle and heard a gunshot from inside the home. Lt. Sean Edwards says Watson called police, saying he found Harris in the bathroom.

Harris’s mother, Lakeisha Harris, says Watson’s stories have been inconsistent.

Naki’a Harris’s 1-year-old son was present in the house during the shooting but was unharmed.
