TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - A California police chief has been sworn in as the new chief of police in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe.

Sylvia Moir (moy-er) was appointed to the job two months ago and sworn in Friday.

She had been the police chief in El Cerrito, California since 2010.

Moir is the first externally appointed chief in Tempe since 1968.

She succeeds Tom Ryff, who retired in December.

Moir was one of three finalists for the job.
