CHICAGO (AP) - Police and family members say a 13-year-old Chicago boy who was hit by a stray bullet has undergone surgery.

The Chicago Tribune reports (https://trib.in/22D6APT ) the seventh-grader was shot in the lower back Friday night in the South Austin neighborhood on the city’s West Side.

Police spokesman Veejay Zala says someone pulled out a gun and fired shots during an argument on the street between two groups of people. The boy was standing some distance away on a sidewalk when he was struck by one of the shots. Police say he was not the intended target.

His great uncle, Malkey Cobb, says the boy was walking home after playing basketball with friends when he was shot.

He remained in critical condition Saturday afternoon, and no one was in custody, police said.
