BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - A Southeast Texas grand jury has indicted a 19-year-old man in a shooting that damaged the campaign headquarters of a sheriff’s candidate.

19-year-old Adam Carver was indicted in Jefferson County on a charge of deadly conduct and was being held Saturday at the county jail on $100,000 bond.

Witnesses told Beaumont police that someone yelled a racial slur from a passing vehicle at people gathered Feb. 29 outside the campaign offices for Zena Stephens, who is black.

At least one shot was fired toward the building, shattering glass, but no one was injured.

The Beaumont Enterprise reports (https://bit.ly/1UohDIf ) police found five people in the vehicle when it was later stopped and some implicated Carver.

Stephens advanced to a May runoff for the Democratic nomination for Jefferson County sheriff.
