ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A Rochester woman has pleaded not guilty to murder in the suffocation death of her newborn daughter last year.

The Democrat and Chronicle reports (https://on.rocne.ws/1SdcTia ) that a grand jury indicted 22-year-old Lashae Bennett in connection with the baby’s May 19, 2015 death.

Bennett pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter at her arraignment Friday.

Prosecutors said the child was born alive but suffocated inside Bennett’s clothing.

Assistant District Attorney Kyle Rossi said the baby struggled for about 30 minutes before she died.

Bennett was arrested earlier this week following the grand jury’s indictment and is being held in the Monroe County Jail without bail.

She is due back in court April 8.
